News: Strathearn Community Hall /Rink Closure

Dear Strathearn Community,

Following the lead of the City of Edmonton, and the Federal Government announcement yesterday (March 18, 2020), declaring Alberta in state of Public Health Emergency due to Coronavirus-19, the Strathearn Community League (SCL) wants to formally announce to our residents and members the closing of all our facilities (hall /rink / playgrounds) until further notice.

At the moment, we do not know with certainty the date set by the City to reopen these facilities. However, we would like to reassure all our members that we will be posting clear and accurate communication, as we are officially informed, through all our social media sources and website. Please check us constantly for updates.

We understand these are difficult news for all. At SCL we believe that the inconvenience of changing our normal life at this time is a small price we are called to embrace together for the safety and health of our communities and our nation.

Please consider the wise words of our public health officials, posted in one of the news of the National Post on March 10, 2020, referring to their plan battling Coronavirus-19 in Canada:

The next best thing to stopping the virus completely is to slow it down, and try to delay widespread community transmission as long as possible to ease the burden on the health-care system.

For our Community League members and residents this means that, applying immediately, all our:

  • Regularly scheduled Classes have been suspended.

  • Private Hall Rentals have been cancelled. No additional bookings will be accepted at this time.

Individuals who need to cancel and ask for refunds from hall rentals or our programs, please contact us at hall@strathearncl.org or programs@strathearncl.org

We Want to Support the Strathearn Community

These are ways we, residents of Strathearn, can support each other at these trial times:

  • Reach out if you are Self-Isolating and/ or Quarantine: For individuals who have self-isolated or are quarantined and require supports, please check out the SCL website and Facebook page in the next few days for a list of supports, contact information and other resources. We are working on setting up a Strathearn Community Support Line on our Facebook Page, dedicated to share this information and to promote a community platform for those individuals who would like to share resources, information or offer support to others in our community. Stay tuned

  • Practice Kindness and Good Neighbor Spirit: For individuals who would like to offer supports to others who are self-isolated or quarantined, we certainly encourage that residents check in with your neighbours, particularly those who are vulnerable or have mobility issues. When providing support, please follow safe practices and guidelines for interaction to avoid spreading illness.

  • Staying Connected .The League is exploring options for safe ways to get out (or stay in) and stay connected while adhering to social distancing principles. Check us for updates or contact us through Facebook or our email address at communications@strathearncl.org

  • Share your Good Ideas with SCL: Let us know if there is something you would like to do or share with the community during this time. If you have an idea for an online workshop or presentation or if you would like to be involved connect with us!

  • Invest in our Local Businesses: please remember that this pandemic has not only affected our health system but also represents a great financial crisis for many in our community. One way that we can support our community is helping our local businesses to keep alive and making our community vibrant. Places that are still running through new ways of service, such as delivery, are: Juniper Cafe Bistro, Ralph's Handi Mart, among others. Please check our Facebook Page for updates.

Finally, we will like to reassure our community that the League is following the information provided by various federal and provincial health agencies and all levels of government and is committed to implementing appropriate measures as new information emerges.

If you would like to review these measurements, as they emerge and change constantly, please check on the Government of Alberta COVID-19 website under "Mass gathering restrictions". As Today:

All Albertans are prohibited from attending public recreation facilities and private entertainment facilities. This includes gyms, swimming pools, arenas, science centres, museums, art galleries, community centres, children’s play centres, casinos, racing entertainment centres and bingo halls.

Please also remember that there are numerous online resources available to help you stay informed and navigate this situation. There are informational websites available from the Government of Alberta, the Government of Canada, and the World Health Organization with tools for the public.

Staying connected and making sure everyone is getting what they need is important for us and the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL). In the meantime, please keep yourself and families safe.
