Make your own Bee Hotel!

Spring will soon be blooming -- don't miss your chance to help pollinators in their important work. Kick off Environment Week on May 30 and join our workshop from 2-4pm to create your own bee hotel. Thanks to a TD Parks People grant, we are able to offer material kits ($35 value) for free! This workshop will be led by the knowledgeable volunteers from Edmonton & Area Land Trust (EALT). Your bee hotel is yours to keep, or if you like you can donate it EALT to be used in conservation areas.

This workshop will be held virtually, and we will deliver the materials to registrants in Strathearn, Bonnie Doon, Holyrood or Forest Heights.

Please note that you need access to your own power drill and regular bits to complete this project, but the other materials will be provided.

Capacity is limited to 25 registrants so don't delay! Sign up now at:

Fulton Ravine South Park: Donation Match

Strathearn Community League is Matching Park Donations!

The Fulton Ravine South Park is located along the Fulton Ravine in the heart of residential communities, near local businesses and the Capilano library, and is a unique park that incorporates the existing Capilano skatepark. The skatepark has an innovative design that is enjoyed by people across Southeast Edmonton and is one of the most well used public amenities in the area.

The South East Community League Association (SECLA) has raised over $500,000 for additional park amenities and construction but there is a projected shortfall of $25,000. Construction is slated to begin this spring regardless of the shortfall and amenities may have to be scaled back if funds aren’t available.

Could you please help with the $25,000 shortfall?

Donations of ANY size would be appreciated.

The Strathearn Community League has decided to match all donations up to a total of $1,500 from the community for a total of $3,000 towards this park project in our part of the City! Make your donation do double duty!

Fulton Ravine South Park Project Information:

Fulton Park Plan.jpg

Now more than ever, we understand that neighbourhood parks are essential for health and well-being. SECLA is working with the City to add amenities to the Fulton Ravine South Park, but we need your help to get the project over the finish line!

Currently, a skatepark is the only amenity in the park. There is nowhere to sit, no shade, and no place to site and enjoy or stroll through the park. (SECLA) conducted a formal community survey in 2016 to ask what would people would like to see in the park, and the design plan reflects what was heard from you. Some of the key features include:

  • A paved walking loop - the paved walkway connects all the features of the park and allows accessibility for all ages and abilities, as well as being a fitness feature in itself. The walkway also connects to the north edge of the park and leads to the Capilano library and 101 Avenue beyond.

  • A water fountain/water bottle filling station was also requested in the survey and while it was not financially feasible to place this next to the skatepark, SECLA funded the installation of the water fountain near the entrance to the Capilano library, a mere few steps away.

  • Adult/youth fitness equipment will be included in fitness pods along the walkway. The equipment will be multipurpose pieces that focus on balance and strength.

  • The benches included in the design will have arms to improve accessibility for sitting down and getting up, especially for those who are elderly or with mobility issues. Most of the benches are placed in groupings of two or more to make it easier to chat with your neighbor.

  • Tables for seating and to enjoy picnics in the park.

  • A half-basketball court.

  • Shade elements were strongly requested in the survey, and this is captured in the design by the inclusion of shade trees and a shade structure.

  • The community also asked for native planting and edible plantings and the plan is for future naturalized plantings along the north edge of the park. We will be working with Root for Trees to add native plants and edible plants in this area by community planting projects; however, the planting can only begin after a one to two-year period during which the area is undisturbed. This future planting area will be fenced off once construction begins on the rest of the park.

Love thy neighbor… from a safe distance.

Love thy neighbor… from a safe distance.

Share some community spirit — compose a message (not necessarily romantic!) to someone in Strathearn and we will hand deliver it for you on Valentine’s Day.

How it works:

Before 8 am on February 9, you can submit a message and pay here – we will print out your message and deliver it on February 13th or 14th.

OR

Before 8 am on February 9, print off our template* and fill it out yourself, then enclose with $2 and leave it in the community hall mailbox. We will collect these and deliver them the same as those that are ordered through the website.

PLEASE NOTE:

Deadline for message submission: 8 am on Tuesday, Feb 9th.

Each message costs $2.

You must include the recipient’s address and it must be within the Strathearn neighborhood boundary. Although we probably all know where “Andrew with the hat” lives, we want to ensure the right people are reached.

Funds will be used for league expenses such as funding league events, supplies or maintenance for the rink or AV system, beautification of the grounds/garden, etc.

* Template instructions: Print off the page. Write the recipient’s name and address on the “deliver to” lines. Turn over and write your message on the other side. Fold over on the dotted lines and tape closed.
